portrait assignment

I found 3 photos that have qualities that I would like to emulate in a portrait.

Owen Cherry

I love this portrait and the way it simply portrays this girl. There isn't much to distract us from her. I like that I can speculate a lot about her from something so simple. So I would like to emulate simplicity.

Irving Penn

I love the contrast and her expression. I feel as a photographer it is a challenge to capture the correct expression for our particular models. I like how natural yet elaborate this photo seems.

John Canalas

I LOVE this picture. (I actually love this whole series) I love that it shows passion. I think that correctly portraying someone often demands representing what they are passionate about because in a sense this defines who and what we are.

So to wrap it up the challenges I am going to attempt to conquer in this portrait is to simply portray an expression and passion of someone I care about. (this will be hard because my mom hates getting her picture taken, she spends all her time hiding from the camera!)

Major News!!

So I was going to wait til I had more time to elaborate on this but I just got home from the Paisley concert (which I loved!!) and I can't wait until tomorrow but since it is so late and I am going to work at 8:30 tomorrow the elaborateness is going to have to wait!! To make this long eventful story short this morning I got a phone call from Steve Bule and found out that in May (technically April) I will be going to ITALY!!! Can you believe it?? I sure can't!! YEAH, thats all for tonight!!

Uhm life???

So I decided to get in to school and like it again!! It is such a relief, and I am actuallyloving school. Granted it is only the what third week? Oh well I still love it. It is so nice to finally be in my major and learning things I actually care about. I also talked to Simon and decided to get my BFA. However, the only down part about that is instead of graduating next spring like I had anticipated I will be graduating in spring 2010. In the end I figure it will be extremely worth it and since I like school again it shouldn't be too much of a strain! (I say that now, just wait til next spring!!) I am kind of worried about getting accepted into the program though I have to submit a portfolio of about 20 items. I am concerned about not getting in, you can only apply in March so that gives me two March's to get in and if not I am basically screwed.......so I am working on making it amazing hahaha!! (Considering I can't draw we shall see what happens) So wish me luck. Also Emily and my Best Life Ever Diet is going pretty well. January 31st is the determining date to see how well it is really working. I am also almost completely finished with a rag quilt I have been working on for 2 years!! haha finally it is about time.

Fine Art

I am attempting to define what fine art means to me and use 10 pictures to justify my definition. I have had a really hard time starting this blog, so I guess I'll just try and dive right in!! First off I pick Michael Kenna....

I really enjoy the simplicity of this photo. I love that I get the essence of everday life from something that I would normally find extremely banal. A picture that captures an essence originally.

Next Skye Johansen.... ( I know it is a baby so it shouldn't really count but) A picture that captures an expression.

Next Travis Lovell..... ( I'm totally not trying to be a suck up I LOVE this picture!) A picture that evokes personal refelction.

Nick Brandt..... A picture that makes me feel like I am in the picture.

Next Robert Doisneau..... A picture that conveys passion.

Next Ansel Adams...... A picture that represents truth.

Michael Kenna again...... A picture that is intriguing.

Next Irving Penn....A picture that makes me wonder.

And finally Dorothea Lange..... A picture that I could look at multiple times and still find something I like everytime.
